Matte PLA properties

Data taken from 7 datasheets from manufacturers in Spain, Europe, the United States and China, reviewed on October 26, 2026. The shaded bar marks the median of the declared values and each colored tick is a different datasheet. The scales are the same across the whole library, so you can compare materials at a glance.

What is matte PLA

It is a PLA with additives that diffuse light and remove the shine. The surface ends up looking more like an injection-molded part or ceramic, and layer lines are much less noticeable. The 7 datasheets analyzed print it with the nozzle at 190–230 °C and the bed at 40–60 °C, and declare a median density of 1.31 g/cm³.

Matte PLA compared with PLA

  • Hides the layers and small surface defects.
  • Flatter colors, without reflections.
  • Somewhat more brittle in some formulations: compare the tensile strength (37 MPa median) with that of PLA in the bars.

How to print matte PLA

Like regular PLA. If you notice a dirtier nozzle or some wear with continued use, check the datasheet for your spool: some fillers that give the matte finish are slightly abrasive.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about matte PLA

Can matte PLA be painted?

Yes, and very well: the shine-free surface grips primer better than that of glossy PLA.
